Christmas was the only holiday they would be considered free. The master's family was exspected to provide clothing and treats, like fruit. Slaves did have their own ceremonies for marrige, but they were not legal. Slaves could sometimes earn money ny working during the week when they were not assigned to tasks or duties.

The boy had facked a death, and his death was blamed on Jim, the runaway slave. Jim wanted to run away to Caro, so he could become a free slave and work to get money to buy his family.
